HFS Parent Pages

Welcome to the University of Washington Department of Housing & Food Services (HFS) Parent Pages, which are designed to familiarize you with the many resources we offer. We hope that the more information you have about the HFS residential experience, the more comfortable you will be with your student's transition. Our goal is to help ensure that your student becomes an integrated member of this exciting and rewarding community.

Welcome

On August 7, 2009, a welcome letter was sent from Pamela J. Schreiber, Director of HFS, to the parents and guardians of all students assigned to the residence halls. You may view the letter here.

Prospective and New Students

Whether you are physically coming to campus or using the Internet for a virtual visit, there are many ways to get to know the environs.

Campus guided tours are led by University of Washington (UW) students who combine knowledge of the campus with personal experiences. During the tour, you will have the chance to ask questions about academics, student life, residence halls, research opportunities and much more. Tours are free and do not require reservations.

Life on Campus

Living in the Halls—In addition to the convenience of living close to classes and campus resources, residence hall students have many opportunities to participate in a variety of educational and social programs.

Dining Account—The Resident Dining Account can be used at any HFS location on campus (restaurants, cafés, espresso bars and express markets), and even at many vending machines.

Apartment LivingNordheim Court offers the independence of off-campus living and resources similar to those found in the residence halls. Managed by Lorig Management Services, Nordheim Court is staffed by a licensed building manager and leasing staff, and has an on-site Community Manager and Community Assistants, hired by the UW, to provide residential support and social programming.

Student Responsibilities

The UW is committed to encouraging mature self-direction by holding the student responsible for his/her actions. Below are contracts designed to ensure personal accountability:

Residence Hall Contracts—Sample contract for the 2009–10 academic year

Co-Signer Guarantee—All residents of the UW residence halls who are younger than the age of 18 must have a parent or guardian act as a guarantor signer on all contracts and agreements to which the student agrees. Guarantor responsibility expires when the student turns 18.

FERPA—The Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) prevents us from releasing information (including how much is owed on the housing account) to anyone other than your student without his/her authorization. Your student may authorize HFS to release information about housing to specific individuals by entering their names on the appropriate place on the housing application, or by editing the online application through the Application Information and Instructions webpage. Please note that HFS can not release room numbers to any unauthorized person, including friends, relatives and parents.

Husky Card Account

Deposit money in your student's Husky Card Account online with a VISA or MasterCard. Use the Guest Deposit feature, which requires the student to have first registered their account. Then simply enter first name, last name and the UW student ID number with two leading zeroes.
