H1N1 Flu Updates

HFS is working closely with the UW and Hall Health to monitor outbreaks of the H1N1 virus on campus and to help keep students healthy. Please visit www.uw.edu/flu for updates and http://hallhealth.washington.edu/h1n1 for information on the H1N1 vaccine, flu-like symptoms and self-care.

HFS' role

HFS is also currently implementing services for students who choose to self isolate in their residence hall room during a flu-like illness, including a meal delivery plan for sick students.  We will continue to add more information as it becomes available. In the meantime, check out our list of FAQs.

Learn How to Clean Your Room . . . if you've been sick:

The H1N1 flu strain is easily transmittable through coughs and sneezes. If droplets from a cough or sneeze land on a surface and a person touches the surface then touches his or her eyes, mouth, or nose, the virus can be spread. Because flu viruses and other germs can live on a hard surface for 2 or more hours and in the case of the H1N1 virus up to 8 hours, it is important to clean after an illness

Clean and Disinfect

Use a product that cleans (detergent) and disinfects (kills germs). Read the labels for instructions and hazard information.

With a clean cloth, rub the surface vigorously after spraying it with your detergent.

Concentrate on areas that could have been touched by your hands. This might include your desk, chair, shelves, doorknob, refrigerator door handle and microwave oven. Use sanitizer cloths to wipe your computer keyboard, telephone, remote control and hand-held peripherals. Wash your hands after cleaning.

Empty your wastebasket and then clean and disinfect it. Wash your hands after emptying the wastebasket.

Wash your laundry!

Wash as usual with detergent and dry as usual. Clean your hands after handling dirty laundry and before removing clean laundry from the washer and dryer.
